(TargetLiberty.org) – On Monday during a speech on the House Floor, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) teased that he would soon be bringing up a motion to vacate against Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). He also reiterated that his efforts to oust McCarthy from his seat would start this week.

As he stated during his speech “Stay tuned.” Over the past weekend, Gaetz had also stated that he was going to be moving ahead with his attempt to get McCarthy removed from the Speakership. This was after the House Speaker made the decision to collaborate with the Democrats in order to pass a continuing resolution (CR) that allowed them to avoid a government shutdown on Saturday.

However, Gaetz has for weeks opposed the possibility of a collaboration with the Democrats. During his speech, he spoke about an alleged “secret side deal” between the Speaker and President Biden that concerns future funds that will be given to Ukraine. However, the stopgap funding bill that was approved on Saturday only hours before the shutdown deadline did not include any provisions to provide funding for Ukraine despite the request made by the White House.

On Sunday, Biden had alluded that there was a deal in place that would allow for more funding to be given to Ukraine, stating that they had just made a deal about it.

Late On Tuesday, October 3rd, Speaker Kevin McCarthy was voted out. The final vote to remove him was 216 – 210. Eight republicans joined all the democrats in order to remove him. His removal is the first time in US history that a speaker was voted out. Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina is now the temporary speaker after the removal.
