(TargetLiberty.org) – The Associated Press in a recent report revealed that hundreds of migrants were living inside the shuttle bus center at Chicago O’Hare International Airport before the city found places for them to be moved into shelters. As the report noted the migrants have to use the airport bathrooms and are slipping on cardboard on the floor.
A volunteer at the airport Vianney Marzullo, told the AP that this was supposed to function as a “stop-and-go place” and that the current situation was concerning both in terms of safety and public health. The migrants are hidden from the public behind black curtains and all of their movements are being monitored by a private company.
Chicago has two international airports in operation, O’Hare and Midway, which are being used for housing migrants. The city is also struggling to find ways to address the long-term housing needs of migrants and is attempting to have more shelters built.
In the meantime, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott continues his operations of bussing migrants to sanctuary cities, including Chicago, claiming that the move is providing relief to border cities. As he has stated the burden of the immigration crisis should not only fall on border cities like El Paso and Eagle Pass. He has also blasted President Biden’s open border policies which have caused the border crisis, and has been deploying additional buses for transporting migrants to sanctuary cities.
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s first deputy chief of staff Cristina Pacione-Zayas, has stated that Chicago was working to address the current capacity problems in shelters.
