(TargetLiberty.org) – In a recent interview on “60 Minutes” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told Sharyn Alfonsi that there has been an influx in the people who are arriving at the U.S.- Mexico border.

He noted that this is not the case only in the southern border, but that there has been a large movement of people across the world. In recent months, Mayorkas has received a lot of criticism for his handling of the southern border with some Republican lawmakers having called for him to be investigated and potentially impeached.

During his interview, he stated that he believed that the nation is facing “a very serious challenge in certain parts of the border.” However, despite this statement, he has refused to call the situation at the southern border a crisis, which is how many Republicans have described the situation.

He added that he had a lot of faith in those in the Department of Homeland Security and that a “crisis speaks to me of a withdrawal from our mission.”

The number of encounters along the southern border has significantly increased since President Biden first took office. From October 2021 to September 2022 the Customs and Border Patrol reported close to 2.4 million encounters.

The Biden administration introduced new asylum policies recently which attempted to reduce the number of encounters by discouraging Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan migrants from traveling through the southern border. This move has helped ease the number of migrants found on the southern border between December and January, with the number of encounters dropping by close to 100,000.
