(TargetLiberty.org) – Following the grand jury in Manhattan deciding that former President Donald Trump would be indicted in the case relating to the hush money payment, many of his rivals in the Republican primary race defended him. This was a further exhibit of Trump’s continuing influence within the party.

Following the indictment decision many of his declared and potential rivals were quick to jump to his defense against the possibility that Trump might have committed a crime in relation to the case. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in his statement said that the indictment was “un-American” and that the legal case was a “weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda.” He proceeded to blast Manhattan District Attorney Braggs, for being backed by Soros, and for repeatedly allowing those who had conducted criminal misconduct to serve less time, while also “stretching the law” in order to attack a political opponent. Finally, he stated that Florida would not provide any help in an “extradition request.”

Trump is currently expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who was the first major Republican to launch a campaign against Trump in 2024, also posted a video of herself in which she criticized Bragg and stated that this case was “more about revenge than it is about justice.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence similarly called the indictment an example of the “criminalization of politics in this country.” He added that it was a “disservice” to the country.
