(TargetLiberty.org) -On Friday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) accused “extreme MAGA” Republicans of viewing Social Security as a “Ponzi scheme.” He further urged the Democrats to do what they can to protect the program that the MAGA Republicans are trying to destroy. MAGA refers to President Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again.”
For the past week, the White House and Democrats have been arguing with Republicans over whether there are some Republican Congress members who want to cut the programs. This is not the first time that Social Security has been called a Ponzi scheme, a couple of Republican members have previously called it one before.
In an audio interview with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) the senator could be heard calling Social Security a “legal Ponzi scheme.” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has also previously made that comparison during an interview with The Texas Tribune in 2011.
On Tuesday President Biden during the State of the Union address alleged that there were some Republicans who wanted to “sunset” Social Security and Medicare in exchange for agreeing to increase the debt ceiling. Sunsetting would mean that in order for the two programs to continue existing they would need to be reauthorized by Congress. Biden was specifically referring to Sen. Rick Scott’s (R-Fla.) 11-point plan which would require all federal legislation to sunset after five years.
However, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has said that both Medicare and Social Security were “off the table” in any negotiations.
