(TargetLiberty.org) – On Wednesday, Peter Navarro was released from prison where he had served a four-month sentence for failing to comply with a Congressional subpoena connected to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack investigation.
The former Trump administration trade adviser was released from prison and is now expected to make an appearance at the Republican National Convention, according to an email from the Trump 2024 campaign.
On Tuesday, Navarro’s attorney did not respond to any questions relating to his time of exiting the federal prison in Miami or the possibility of him traveling to Milwaukee, where the Republican nominating event is taking place. Navarro is being released only one day before the end of the convention on Thursday evening.
Last year, Navarro had been convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress, one relating to his decision not to appear for his deposition before the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack and a second for not providing the documents that were connected to the investigation.
Navarro had previously tried to remain out of prison while he appealed the conviction, however, his last-ditch efforts had failed as U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts handed down an “in-chambers” opinion right before the start of his prison term.
The Chief Justice, who handles emergency cases from the District of Columbia U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, stated that he had denied the application and noted that the case was pending appeal on its merits. He added that Navarro had forfeited challenging the court’s ruling that Trump had not given him executive privilege. However, it is likely that the case regarding executive privilege is going to feature in the appeals case.
