(TargetLiberty.org) – On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) announced his “three-pronged approach” to restrain the Department of Justice’s authority after former President Donald Trump was convicted last week on multiple felony charges.
Johnson revealed his plans to use Congressional oversight, legislation, and the appropriations process against the DOJ after Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts relating to falsifying business records.
At Tuesday’s press conference, Johnson announced all his efforts “will happen vigorously,” considering how high the stakes are and how people are “losing faith in our institutions.”
He added that what has happened as a result of Trump’s conviction “should concern every single one of us.”
Johnson then turned his attention to Democrats, accusing them of orchestrating many of the legal charges Trump is facing, suggesting it is an attempt to prevent him from reentering the White House.
Referencing Trump’s lead in the polls, Johnson claimed Democrats “see this happening” and are so “desperate to stop” Trump that they had resorted to using the judicial system, adding the effort was a “new” and “dangerous” low for Democrats.
He claimed that pursuing Trump had eroded “the people’s faith in our system of justice,” reiterating what House Republican Leader Steve Scalise said about Americans having to believe “justice is blind” and that there’s “equal justice” to “maintain a constitutional republic.”
The House Speaker added that Trump’s conviction hit the core of America and “who we are as a nation,” suggesting the guilty verdict is “bigger than” Trump and was “about our system itself.”
