(TargetLiberty.org) – Last week, the Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling stated that there would not be a repetition of the 1968 riots that had taken place outside the Democratic National Convention. Many Democrats are worried that anti-Israel demonstrations, similar to the ones that had occurred during the Vietnam War, would take place with the police clashing with the protesters. With the convention having also taken place in Chicago in 1968 many fear a possible repetition of the events that had taken place almost 60 years ago.
Despite this Snelling stated that the police department was preparing for the protests that were expected to take place at the time. He added that this was not going to be like 1968 and that the department would be “more deliberate” and controlled. As he pointed out, the officers have received the best possible training to deal with any potential civil unrest.
The Democratic party has been worried about the “optics” of protest that turns violent just as President Joe Biden moves forward with his reelection bid.
Andrew Baer, a history professor at the University of Alabama, argued that the Democrats, Biden, and the mayor of Chicago wanted peace and they did not want to have to deal with the negative optics that a possible protest might cause.
Snelling in an op-ed to the Chicago Tribune stated that his department had been caught off-guard during the 2020 riots, but that since then there has been more training on how to handle civil unrest and protests.
