(TargetLiberty.org) – Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas called Saturday’s assassination attempt on Trump a “failure” of the Secret Service.
Speaking to CNN on Monday, Mayorkas emphasized what occurred on Saturday “cannot happen,” noting that is why President Joe Biden “directed an independent review” of Saturday’s attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
He noted the independent review meant the “conclusions” and “recommendations” of the review would “have the full confidence of the American public.”
Mayorkas stated the department would “carefully analyze in an independent and thorough fashion” what happened on Saturday and would make recommendations that would be implemented.
When asked if the shooting was a “failure” of the Secret Service, Mayorkas confirmed.
Mayorkas noted that when he said something like the assassination attempt couldn’t occur, he was referencing “a failure.”
The DHS Secretary also repeated comments similar to those Biden made about the attempt on Trump’s life, calling for damaging political rhetoric to cool down.
The Secret Service has been under intense scrutiny since Saturday’s assassination attempt when a gunman opened fire from a rooftop 300 yards from Trump during a Butler, Pennsylvania, rally.
A bullet grazed the former President’s right ear. A bullet also struck former fire chief Corey Comperatore, 50, who was killed while shielding his wife and daughters from the bullets. James Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 57, were also struck by bullets but were stable as of Sunday.
Since Saturday’s attempt, Congressional Republicans have also promised to launch an investigation into the incident, while Biden has ordered an independent review of the rally’s security measures.
