During his visit to the U.S.-Mexico border on Sunday President Biden visited one of the busiest ports of entry. This is the first official trip that President Biden has taken to the border since being voted into office. The border crisis has repeatedly caused conflict between Republicans and Democrats, as Republican lawmakers have maintained that the lack of strict policies by the administration has led to an unprecedented influx of immigrants crossing the border.

During his visit, Biden did not meet with migrants or visit any of the places that migrants have camped out in according to an MSNBC report. The network also spoke with a number of migrants who disclosed that they had thought Biden would meet with them. Many also expressed that they were planning on asking him to find ways to speed up the process that allowed them to enter the country.

As part of the visit, Biden watched as border officers in El Paso, Texas conducted vehicle searches to find drugs, money, and other contraband. Still, despite Biden visiting the border for the first time, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott was not entirely welcoming as he handed Biden a letter upon his arrival which disclosed all the ways that the “chaos” at the border was a “direct result” of the lack of strict border policies followed by his administration.

Biden also met with border officials to discuss not only the influx in migration but also the increased cases of trafficking fentanyl and other synthetic opioids which have led to an increase in the number of overdoses in the country.
