(TargetLiberty.org) – With the COVID-19 pandemic dominating every news source in existence, it’s no surprise other stories fly under the radar. This may be exactly what congressional Progressives Liberals were banking on when they introduced the “New Way Forward Act” (H.R.5383 — 116th Congress (2019-2020)).

In the words of acting Homeland Security Security Chad Wolf, the bill, as it’s written, “…from a pure legality perspective, it just guts the rule of law.” Not only would it effectively abolish US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it would increase the number of convicted felons allowed to stay within America’s borders.
Most low-level drug crimes, which have been couched as “victimless crimes” by former President Barack H. Obama and others of his ilk, would be eliminated as deportable offenses. Even felonies where the term of imprisonment is less than 5 years would not be enough to kick the offender out. “Term of imprisonment” means the net sentence, so an eight-year term that has four of those suspended would fall below the limit.
The American legal system has long been one of the fairest of any nation in the world, and that’s a good thing. However, every day, in courtrooms across the country, defense attorneys plead charges that have resulted in someone’s death or were based on child sex crimes to down below that five-year threshold. One has to wonder just how cheaply these politicians value the lives of their citizens?
