US Starts to See 'Shelter In Place' Orders

( – As the coronavirus outbreak continues to make its way across the United States, Americans are beginning to see orders telling them to “shelter in place” and warning them not to leave their homes.

Residents in San Francisco and a large section of Northern California, which includes Silicon Valley, have been told by officials to “shelter in place” in response to the outbreak. The city of Berkeley and residents living in San Mateo, Marin, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, and Alameda have also been told to stay in their homes.

California is just the start. These orders could soon be seen in other places around the country. On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that he’s “absolutely considering” a lockdown as well.

The “shelter in place” directives are an attempt to slow down the spread of the virus through extreme social distancing. The hope is that these steps will be able to keep the American healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed as the number of coronavirus cases spike.
