Upcoming ID Deadline Could Affect Millions of Americans

(TargetLiberty.org) – Americans are tired of being told what to do after enduring months of COVID-19 restrictions and quarantines. The nation is heading out of its worst health crisis in over a century and economic collapse since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

With all this happening, one would think the federal government wouldn’t instigate a new set of rules, right? Particularly a new one unrelated to the COVID-19 pandemic, correct?

Guess again — the government is about to require a new imposition on Americans.

Want to Fly? You Might Need to Think Again

Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 in response to a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission that the federal government “set standards” for the state regarding the issuance of identification sources like state ID cards and driver’s licenses. The act created minimum standards and barred federal agencies from accepting identification from states not complying with the act.

The REAL ID Act remained dormant for more than a decade. However, starting on October 1, 2021, any person over 18 who wants to fly will need to have a REAL-ID-issued federally approved identification card or an approved driver’s license.

The good news is all 50 states recently came into full compliance with the act. The bad news is not everyone drives or has access to a facility providing REAL-ID-approved identification cards.

Additionally, Department of Homeland Security data indicates that only about 43% of driver’s licenses in current use meet REAL-ID standards. That means even if you have a proper state-issued driver’s license, you could still be turned away at the airport for lack of proper ID under these new standards.

The federal government was able to step in and supplement unemployment payments and provide other relief efforts. It was able to delay federal evictions. Why can’t the Biden administration do something to delay this measure until everyone has a proper ID?
