(TargetLiberty.org) – On Wednesday, the House of Representatives was at a standstill for a second day as Speaker McCarthy, R-California, is trying to squash the revolt by conservative Republicans.
McCarthy stated that he felt “blindsided” by the fact that members of his own party were working to block environmental regulations on household gas stoves, but predicted that the two sides were going to come together and resolve their differences. He further added that the party was going to come out of this stronger.
Despite McCarthy’s claims, the chamber remained paralyzed for a second day, as McCarthy’s leadership team had to schedule and subsequently cancel another attempt to push forward legislation. Rep. Tim Burchett told reporters that they were getting closer to resolving the “trust issues.”
The hardline Republicans have promised to use all “procedural tools” at their disposal to slow down legislation. Some have even brought forward questions about McCarthy potentially losing his position as Speaker. The same hard-liners who are now trying to get McCarthy to make concessions are the same ones who opposed his appointment as Speaker in January until he agreed to their concessions.
The group was also a part of the 71 Republicans who opposed the debt ceiling legislation that was agreed upon by McCarthy and President Biden. They have throughout this time maintained that the deal did not include sufficient spending cuts, and have even pointed out that following their opposition one of their group members faced retaliation.
McCarthy has dismissed these claims of retaliation and has stated that he would push for more spending cuts.
