Twitter Has Been Stripped of Its Legal Protections in India

(TargetLiberty.org) – The global fightback against big tech is gathering pace, and Twitter has just become the first US company sanctioned under India’s new IT laws. It seems the notoriously Liberal company tried its usual tricks against a Conservative politician – but this time, it blew up in its face.

On June 16, Indian media reported that Twitter had lost its immunity from liability for content posted on its platform. Under India’s new IT Act, all web platforms that host content must appoint officers to ensure the content complies with Indian law. The deadline for them to be appointed was May 25 – and Twitter didn’t bother. India even granted the company an extension, and Twitter still failed to comply. Now, India has pulled the social media site’s legal shield, and the company can face action over “unlawful” and “inflammatory” content.

India isn’t wasting time, either. They’re already gunning for Twitter after the platform added a “manipulated media” tag to the spokesman of the BJP, India’s Conservative ruling party. Police have already raided their offices in Delhi and Gurugram. Liberal tech giants might think they’re above the law, but India is determined to prove them wrong.
