Trump's Optimism About COVID-19 Mirrors Dr. Fauci's

( – President Donald Trump weighed in optimistically on the prognosis for the COVID-19 pandemic in a series of tweets since his October 5 release from Walter Reed Medical Center. Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the nation’s top infectious disease experts, supported that optimism while reminding Americans not to “trivialize” the gravity of the situation.

Dr. Fauci made those remarks during an interview conducted later that day at The New Yorker Festival. He confirmed a significant portion of Americans contracting the coronavirus experienced no symptoms of the disease, and those who did typically only suffered mild symptoms. Of course, the elderly and individuals of any age with comorbidities, or pre-existing conditions, could suffer a “severe outcome” from infection.

Trump’s Tweets Align With Fauci’s Stance

Trump’s tweets extolled the work of medical experts, warned Americans not to let COVID-19 “dominate” their lives, and advised the country he felt better than he had for years in the wake of his hospitalization.

His tweets also drew more than their fair share of criticism, particularly from Democrats and other factions from the Left. However, his optimism mirrored recent remarks by Dr. Fauci during an interview at the WIRED25 event held on September 30.

According to Dr. Fauci, the outlook for a successful reopening of the country would require Americans to take five steps:

  • Practice proper social distancing whenever possible;
  • Wear facial masks “uniformly;”
  • Avoid large crowds, particularly indoors;
  • Likewise, host gatherings outside whenever possible; and
  • Thoroughly wash their hands frequently.

Additionally, with heightened concerns about the upcoming flu and cold season, Dr. Fauci noted the proper use of those five preventative measures could effectively diminish the incidence of influenza and not just the transmission of the coronavirus.

Americans need to receive consistent guidance and decisive leadership in the face of the worst pandemic in over 100 years. President Trump and Dr. Fauci are providing that level of leadership.
