(TargetLiberty.org) – The Supreme Court has been called to weigh in on whether a former President should be granted complete immunity from criminal prosecution for any of the actions that he had taken while in office. The decision relates to former President Donald Trump who has been pushing with his legal team that he should be immune from any prosecution that is connected to his actions ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. This ruling is going to place the justices in a tough spot to make a decision on this ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The Democrats have been pushing for Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from ruling on this, because of his wife’s position supporting Trump during the time of the attack.
The Court has been called to make a decision on this case following Jack Smith’s request which is seeking to bypass the ruling of the Appeals court in an attempt to speed up the process of moving forward the case so that it can go to trial before the 2024 presidential election. In their request, the prosecutors pointed out that if the case was allowed to proceed through the court of appeals then the pace of the review could result in a final decision not being made for several months. This could lead to the Court not being able to hear this case and decide on it within the term.
However, if the Supreme Court agrees to take up this request it could result in the immunity issue having a final resolution before the end of June. However, Smith has also put through a request to resolve this case even faster. This could mess up former President Trump’s attempt to delay the trial until after the 2024 presidential election when he is hoping that he will win back the White House and will be in a position to pardon himself.
