(TargetLiberty.org) – The Department of Justice and FBI investigators have gathered more evidence that suggests that former President Trump had deliberately obstructed the authorities in the investigation relating to the classified documents recovered from his Mar-a-Lago estate last summer.

A new report from the Washington Post cites anonymous sources which suggest that investigators have found new evidence which shows that following the Department of Justice’s subpoena in the case Trump had personally gone through the documents in his home in order to try and hold on to some of the files.

The subpoena was originally received by Trump and his team last spring. Following the subpoena, some of the classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago estate had been returned. However, in the summer the FBI executed a search warrant which resulted in the recovery of hundreds of classified records from Mar-a-Lago which had remained in Trump’s possession after his time in office ended. According to the Presidential Records Act, all presidential materials need to be turned over to the National Archives following the end of a White House tenure.

Investigators have also gathered evidence that showed that Trump had instructed his team to mislead federal officials who were attempting to recover the presidential records still in his possession in early 2022. These attempts were made prior to the subpoena.

This new evidence shows that Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed to handle this case, is turning his attention towards obstruction and Trump’s attempts to withhold the documents.
