(TargetLiberty.org) – Donald Trump, the former U.S. President, is set to be in Ames, Iowa, this Saturday to witness the much-anticipated “Cy-Hawk” matchup between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones.
This year, the Cyclones are hosting at the Jack Trice Stadium, with the game beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT.
In a statement reported by the Des Moines Register, Matt Whitaker, who served as an acting attorney general under Trump, expressed excitement about Trump’s visit. “Donald J. Trump has fond memories of the electrifying atmosphere from when he last attended this game in 2015,” Whitaker mentioned.
Whitaker himself has a history with the Hawkeyes, having played tight end from 1990 to 1992, accumulating 194 yards and scoring two touchdowns during his tenure.
Jack Whitver, the Iowa Senate majority leader and former Cyclones wide receiver, also shared his enthusiasm. “This gathering will bring together a massive number of Iowans, all eager to support their team of choice,” Whitver noted. “It’s an honor to have Trump present for what many consider the pinnacle of college sports rivalries.”
Recalling the 2015 match Trump watched, the Hawkeyes emerged victorious, securing a 31-17 win over the Cyclones, thanks in part to a dominant second-half performance.
Back in that game, Iowa’s quarterback, C.J. Beathard, delivered 215 passing yards and three touchdowns, while running back Jordan Canzeri contributed 124 rushing yards and a touchdown.
This season, both teams commenced their campaigns on a positive note. The Hawkeyes triumphed over Utah State 24-14, with quarterback Cade McNamara making 17 completions out of 30 attempts for 191 yards, along with two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Kaleb Johnson added 63 rushing yards and a touchdown to the tally.
The Cyclones bested the Northern Iowa Panthers with a score of 30-9. Their quarterback, Rocco Becht, notched 113 yards and two touchdowns in the air, as well as a rushing touchdown.
The sentiments of both Whitaker and Whitver highlight the significance of this rivalry in the college football landscape. The game promises to be an exhilarating experience for Trump and all attendees this Saturday.
