Former President Trump blasted Democratic lawmakers on Friday after they released several years of his tax returns. He further warned that this decision would have dire consequences for the country and even praised his own ability for avoiding paying income taxes.

Trump in a statement said, “The Democrats should have never done it, the Supreme Court should have never approved it, and it’s going to lead to horrible things for so many people. The great USA divide will now grow far worse.” The statement was released shortly after his personal and business tax returns had been made public.

He added that the tax returns are just further proof of his own success and his ability to “use depreciation and various other tax deductions” in order to create “thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises.”

Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee, who were in charge of overseeing tax policy and the IRS, released a redacted version of Trump’s tax returns during his time in office, that is from 2015 to 2020. The panel also released a document in which Trump’s avoidance to pay taxes using credits and policies was discussed.

The Ways and Means Committee’s investigation also showed that Trump’s returns had not been audited during his first couple of years in office, despite the IRS policy requiring the president’s tax returns to be audited yearly.

Trump’s tax returns became available to the committee after the Supreme Court struck down a lawsuit that sought to protect them. The release of Trump’s tax returns marks the end of a two-year legal battle.

Trump is the first President since Richard Nixon to refuse to make his tax returns public while in office despite the multiple requests he had received for doing so.
