Trump Leads New CPAC Poll in Evidence of Possible Return to Politics

(TargetLiberty.org) – A new poll shows if former president Donald Trump decides to take another run at the White House, he’s almost certain to win the GOP nomination. But what does it mean for the party’s other presidential hopefuls?

On February 25, pollster McLaughlin & Associates polled 2,573 attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which took place in Orlando, FL. The attendees were asked who they would like to see as the Republican presidential candidate in 2024 – and Trump won by a landslide. The 45th president roared into the lead with 59% support, more than double of runner-up Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL).

Other potential candidates fared even worse. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo drew just 2% support – enough to put him in third place. Every other name on the list, including former VP Mike Pence and former ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, fell short of 1%.

If Trump decides to run in 2024, he’ll be going up against whomever the Democrats choose to potentially replace President Biden, but if he opts to sit out the next election, it looks like DeSantis will be the GOP favorite. The pollsters also asked who attendees would vote for if Trump doesn’t run, and DeSantis took the prize with a crushing 61% support. It looks like, one way or the other, the decision for who will be the next Republican presidential candidate will be made by Donald Trump.
