(TargetLiberty.org) – Former U.N. ambassador and GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley revealed in an interview on Tuesday that she was “inclined in favor of a pardon” for former President Trump if he was found guilty in connection to the federal charges he is facing relating to alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving the White House.
In an appearance on “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show,” Haley argued that it was important to see exactly how the “trial” goes. She added that when it comes to a pardon it is not so much about someone being guilty, but rather it relates more to what would be best for the country. She added that in her view it would be really bad for the country if a former President was left in prison for years because of a documents case. She further argued that this would be something you expect in a “Third World country” and that she had seen cases like that during her time in the United Nations. She added that while she would be “inclined in favor of a pardon” she considers it too early to make any final statements as Trump has not been convicted.
On Tuesday, Trump made his first court appearance in a federal court in Miami following his federal indictment after federal prosecutors accused Trump of mishandling classified documents, some of which relate to the country’s national security and military secrets.
Haley in this latest statement that if the federal indictment claims were true then Trump was “incredibly reckless.” Her remarks exhibit the weird position that many 2024 GOP challengers have found themselves in as they try not to defend their primary opposition, while also appealing to the Republican Party base, many of whom remain Trump supporters.
