A petition has called for Donald Trump to be blocked from running in the 2024 Presidential election due to his alleged violations of the Constitution. So far, the petition has garnered more than 100,000 signatures.

The petition was created by the progressive campaign group MoveOn in November, and originally it took two weeks for them to gather the 50,000 first signatures. By the time that those had been gathered Trump had officially launched his presidential campaign. Currently, the petition has gained more than 125,000 signatures, and MoveOn has stated that they are hoping to see it gain over 200,000 signatures soon.

The petition is effectively asking all secretaries of state, state election officials, and members of Congress to “disqualify” Trump from ever being able to hold office again. This is because he allegedly violated the Constitution’s 14th Amendment with his actions when the Capitol riot broke out on January 6, 2021.

According to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, any person who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” after taking a congressional oath should be prevented from running for office again.

In the petition, it is stated that Donald Trump and his associates were active in planning and paying for “a criminal conspiracy that became the January 6 insurrection”. They add that it is important to fight for democracy and to block Trump from damaging it further.
