(TargetLiberty.org) – Former President Donald Trump has come under scrutiny over an incident during his time in the White House when he had shared alleged classified intelligence with Russian officials. Following the Saturday attacks by the terrorist group Hamas against Israel, this incident has come under scrutiny.
In May 2017, Trump defended his actions after it was revealed that he had discussed with Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak sensitive information about an alleged plot of the Islamic State. Trump had argued that at the time he had every right to share the information that had originally come through intel from Israel.
Still, there were those who had claimed that the President’s decision could have damaged the relationship between Israel and the U.S. It also raised questions about what information Russia might then share with Iran, which is one of Israel’s greatest adversaries in the Middle East and has long provided support for Hamas.
Hamas launched a number of coordinated attacks against Israel, resulting in one of the deadliest days in the Israel-Palestine conflict in decades with over 700 people in Israel and 400 people in Gaza losing their lives since the attacks.
On social media, some users have alleged that it is possible that Trump’s handling of intelligence from Israel could have resulted in the attack launched by Hamas.
Political commentator Thom Hartmann shared on X, formerly referred to as Twitter an article from a Washington Post in 2017 in which it was alleged that Hamas had information on how to bypass Israel’s Iron Dome defenses. The article speculated that this information had been provided to the group by Iran who had in turn learned the information from Russia. However, the one question was who could have given it to Russia. The suggestion was then made that the information had been given by Trump following a request made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
