(TargetLiberty.org) – Former President Trump has requested a federal judge to block the subpoena previously sent to his former vice president, Mike Pence. The subpoena would require Pence to testify in the Department of Justice’s investigation into Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

Trump’s lawyers maintain that Pence’s testimony should be blocked on the grounds of executive privilege and have submitted a motion to have the subpoena blocked. This move was highly anticipated and it is a clear indication that Trump’s team was going to work to keep all those who were close to the former President from testifying in criminal investigations relating to his actions.

Jack Smith, the special counsel overseeing the Department of Justice’s two investigations into Trump, one relating to the 2020 presidential election overturning attempts and the other to the classified documents found in his Mar-a-Lago estate, sent the subpoena out last month. The grand jury is not only looking for Pence’s testimony on the events that took place on Jan. 6, 2021, but also looking for documents relating to the case.

Smith has repeatedly faced difficulties with getting Pence to cooperate after the former Vice President stated that he would be fighting the subpoena. The move to have the subpoena issued was widely perceived as an indication that the investigation is intensifying.

Pence announced that he would be fighting the subpoena which he called “unconstitutional and “unprecedented” after an event in Iowa.

Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, also received a subpoena last month.
