Top Republican Makes His Move Against China

( – Arguably, the world would be a different place today had the Communist People’s Republic of China not mishandled the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. The exact chronology of events remains unknown, and the world may never find out exactly when the pandemic started. What’s certain, however, is that Chinese officials misled the world.

Officials reported the first case of the virus in China in November 2019. Doctors in Wuhan reported the first case of human-to-human transmission of the disease on December 8, 2019. Chinese officials didn’t bother to inform the World Health Organization until December 31, 2019.

However, there’s some dispute about that timeline. Reuters reported in mid-November 2020 that a study conducted by Italy’s National Cancer Institute of Milan found that COVID-19 was spreading throughout Italy as early as September 2019, meaning the disease may have originated earlier in China than first thought or disclosed.

Republican-Led Bill Aims to Hold China Accountable for COVID-19 Spread

On March 11, Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) introduced a bill holding China accountable for its mishandling of the COVID-19 outbreak and lack of transparency with the world. His legislation stated China “should be held accountable” for the loss of American lives, the loss of jobs and the damage to the nation’s economy.

Mast’s bill claims the COVID-19 outbreak was the “direct result” of China’s “suppression of the freedom of expression.” He explained that China’s Communist Party “actively engaged” and continues to engage in a cover-up designed to obscure and hide relevant public health data and information regarding the disease and its origins.

The legislation seeks to have the United States “permanently withhold” debt payments to China as a means of holding the Communist nation accountable for its misdeeds. It calls on the United States and other countries to deduct the public costs related to COVID-19 from any debt obligations owed to China.

As Rep. Mast stated to Fox News, it’s time for Congress to “put America first” and force China to pay back taxpayer funds spent as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial reparations won’t restore American lives or magically end the pandemic. But, it’s a good start towards holding the country accountable for its deadly misdeeds.
