(TargetLiberty.org) – Both Latino and Democratic organizations are slamming Texas officials after it was reported that state troopers had been instructed to violate the human rights of migrants by denying them access to water and pushing kids back into the Rio Grande.
The Houston Chronicle report included a number of incidents where migrants had been injured or killed by the measures that the Texas law enforcement officers and state troopers were following. The report also referred to an email by a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper which included information about the measures being taken to deter immigrants from crossing into the U.S.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took to Twitter to state that if the report was accurate then these acts were “atrocious” and “barbaric.” She had added that she would not have been surprised if these instructions had been given by the state’s Governor who had previously deemed it appropriate to leave migrant children on the street on Christmas Eve during below freezing temperatures.
Many of the critics have blasted Gov. Greg Abbott (R) whose Operation Lone Star has been focused on dealing with immigration.
Abbott’s spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris had told the Hill through email that the state was using every available tool and strategy to reduce illegal crossing. He added that the lack of razor wires or other border blocks has led to migrants being encouraged to attempt the unsafe crossing between the ports of entry, which has made it harder for the DPS troopers and Texas National Guard to do their work.
