Ted Cruz Says White House Basically Sent an Invitation to Putin

(TargetLiberty.org) – A Republican senator has accused the Biden administration of encouraging Vladimir Putin’s imperialist ambitions. Could the conflict that erupted late on Wednesday have been averted if the president hadn’t been so weak on foreign policy?

On February 21, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) released a statement accusing Biden of signaling weakness to the Russian president. According to Cruz, Biden’s indecisiveness over the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline, which was built to allow Russia to export gas to Europe without sending it across Ukrainian territory, convinced Putin he could get away with an ambitious land grab.

Former President Donald Trump took a tough stance on Nordstream 2, imposing sanctions on any company helping to build it. However, soon after Biden took office he removed those sanctions, effectively giving Putin the green light to complete the project. Instead of applying real pressure on Russia, Cruz said the current administration has pursued “an endlessly deferred and wholly uncredible strategy” based on “bizarre tactics” – and it’s failed.

Cruz called for immediate sanctions to permanently end the pipeline project and demonstrate western resolve to stand up to Putin. The administration didn’t listen, and just two days later, Russian tanks crossed the border in a devastating attack. Putin’s forces are now closing in on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv – and Cruz says the Biden administration is “to an enormous extent directly responsible for this crisis.”
