Suspected Attacks in US Under Investigation

Mysterious Attacks in US Under Investigation

( – Emerging technologies, like most things in life, can turn out to be a double-edged sword. For example, scientists developed several uses for microwaves that benefit humankind. However, they can also be used as military-grade weapons. The Air Force recently announced it was testing one such high-powered weapon to take down drones, bypassing the need for less effective jammers, or missiles and other kinetic weapons.

A recent US government report published by the National Academies of Sciences determined that directed microwaves were the most likely cause of the “Havana Syndrome” attacks.

Havana Attacks Under Investigation

US Embassy staff in Havana, Cuba, reported the development of unusual medical ailments in late 2016. They reported a wide range of symptoms, including vertigo, pain in one or both ears, insomnia, visual problems, and cognitive disturbances. The following year, personnel assigned to a US Consulate in China reported similar symptoms.

On April 27, 2021, The Hill reported that officials are currently investigating two possible Havana Syndrome attacks on US soil. One of the attacks took place near an oval-shaped patch of grass called the Ellipse, located south of the White House. A National Security Council member reported symptoms in that incident, which happened in November 2020. Another incident occurred outside Washington, DC to a White House official who was walking her dog in 2019.

A member of the White House told The Hill that the Biden administration prioritized “the health and well-being” of American officials. The official also confirmed the White House was working closely with several agencies and departments to “ensure the safety” of Americans serving worldwide.

The CIA recently created a task force to support any of its personnel affected by the attacks, and the State Department assigned a senior advisor to oversee an existing task force.

Sadly, at this point, no one knows the full extent of these attacks or how long victims might experience symptoms. Although the microwaves are thought to have been directed, it’s not known at this time if these acts were perpetrated by an enemy, or if the occurrences were some sort of accident. Hopefully, US investigators and scientists can get to the bottom of these attacks before anyone else is harmed.
