On March 28, President Biden took questions from reporters at the White House. He managed to get through the session without making any of his trademark gaffes, but alert journalists noticed the aging president was holding cue cards that listed possible questions and the answers he was supposed to give.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) says that’s not good enough. He commented on how we all feel a natural urge to complete sentences for people who’re suffering from cognitive decline, but warned “we shouldn’t have to do it for the commander in chief.”
On Saturday, Biden went off script and said Russian leader Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power,” forcing the White House to “clarify” his statement wasn’t actually official US policy. However, Biden has refused to back down and repeated the same statement on Monday. Paul referenced the behavior, calling it a national security risk and accusing Biden of sending signals that “no one in their right mind would want to send to Russia at this point.”
Former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany has also highlighted Biden’s apparent inability to speak without a cheat sheet, saying the presidential press office must be “scared out of its mind.” If our president can’t be relied on to give a simple briefing without making wild statements about regime change in a hostile nuclear-armed state, maybe that’s cause for concern.
