( – A group of 24 House GOP members is pushing President Biden to not federalize the Texas National Guard, as the state has been focused on bringing down the high levels of illegal immigration along the southern border.

On Tuesday, in a letter sent by the lower chamber members, who were led by Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas), the lawmakers noted that they were hopeful they could get Biden to not agree with their Democratic counterparts on taking control over the National Guard in the state. As they have pointed out, the move would be considered unconstitutional. They have also been pushing for Biden to join Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) in providing support for the protection of the American people.

Weber has said that Abbott has been focused on safeguarding citizens and that the Texas National Guard was instrumental in these efforts. He added that any attempts made by the President to federalize the National Guard would not only be an overstep but also a violation of “constitutional bounds.”

Democratic lawmakers have been pushing for Biden to seize control of the National Guard following the recent incident when the troops had taken control of Shelby Park, near Eagle Pass, Texas.

Abbott has instructed the Texas National Guard to install razor wire along the state’s border with Mexico in order to block the surge in immigration. However, the Biden administration has opposed this move, arguing that the installation was blocking federal border officials from doing their job. The Supreme Court in their ruling noted that the Biden administration was right. Still, the Texas governor has refused to back down with the installations.
