(TargetLiberty.org) – Former AG Bill Barr slammed the claims of Republicans about former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents resembling how classified material was handled by previous presidents.
During an interview with “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream, Barr was called to respond to the comparisons being drawn between Trump’s case and the handling of classified documents under former Presidents Clinton and Obama, and President Biden during his time as vice President. In response, Barr claimed that the difference was clear because every other president had willingly cooperated with the National Archives. He proceeded to state that this was the reason Trump was the only one facing obstruction of justice charges, as they relate to his attempts to stop the federal government from gaining access to the classified material.
Barr added that currently there are two big lies circulating. The first one is that all previous presidents had taken large amounts of classified documents, when in reality in all those situations they had been tasked with creating properly managed and secured spaces for the documents by the archivists. The second lie has to do with the idea that the President has the right to declare any document as “personal.” He added that this was factually “ridiculous” and that there is a distinction between a personal document and an official record prepared by other organizations for the President.
He did however acknowledge that the President did have “some discretion” over documents.
On Thursday, the Department of Justice indicted Trump in a 37-count indictment over his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office in 2021.
