Republicans Frustrated After Schumer Blocks GOP School Safety Bill

Top Democrat Blocks GOP School Safety Bill – Says He Only Wants One Thing

(TargetLiberty.org) – Democrats are loudly insisting we need to do something to protect our children from school shootings, but when Republican senators tried to pass a bill to do exactly that last week, a top Senate Dem blocked it. Now, he’s facing harsh criticism from the GOP.

On May 25, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) called on the Senate to unanimously pass the Luke and Alex School Safety Act. Considering 19 elementary school students had just been murdered by a crazed gunman, passing the bill seems like a no-brainer. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) refused to allow a vote, claiming the bill “could see more guns in schools.”

Schumer went on to say he’d consider the bill if Republicans agree to debate on the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act, which focuses on gun control.

Republicans were quick to condemn Schumer’s intervention, with Johnson accusing him of lying about the bill. In fact, as Johnson pointed out, the bill isn’t about allowing more guns in schools; its goal is to give legal backing to a federal clearinghouse of data and best practices on school safety, which already exists.

The bill is named for two victims of the 2018 Parkland, FL school shooting, and is supported by the parents of Parkland victims. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), who helped write the bill, also called Schumer “a liar and a hack.” Is this an example of the Democrats refusing to take action on a vital issue, just because it doesn’t suit their anti-gun agenda?
