(TargetLiberty.org) – Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) has given a preemptive endorsement to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. DeSantis has not yet announced whether or not he intended to run for the White House in 2024.

In an email sent to his supporters from his campaign account Roy wrote that the United States’ next leader should “be a vibrant and energetic leader with the faith, vision, and courage to chart a new course.” He added that the leader that the U.S. needed would help empower people and would fight against woke culture indoctrination. He proceeded to call Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that leader.

Roy is currently the first Republican congressman to have officially endorsed DeSantis for the White House. Meanwhile, other Republican congressmen had endorsed Trump and Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) endorsed former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. Haley officially announced her bid for the White House in February.

Roy is considered one of the most vocal hardline Republicans in the House, so his move away from Trump can be considered notable. Roy broke from Trump following the 2020 presidential election, after the former President tried to get Republicans to reject the election results.

Roy further has also criticized a Trump-aligned Republican consultant on Twitter after he wrote that “MAGA will never forget.” Roy has also thanked former Vice President Mike Pence for his refusal to do Trump’s bidding and for rejecting the U.S. election results.

Roy has also praised DeSantis calling him a “dedicated husband and father.”
