(TargetLiberty.org) – Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has responded to the recent announcement by a school district that they would not be following his gender policy which would require students to use their biological sex when determining which bathrooms to use.

The new policies have been introduced by the Virginia Education Department (VDOE) and as Youngkin pointed out districts did not have the option of not enforcing the law.

Last week, Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) in a statement noted that the school was planning on continuing to use their previous policies regarding transgender rights and the rights of “gender-nonconforming students” as those are “consistent with both federal and state anti-discrimination laws.”

The 2021 model policies of the VDOE had allowed transgender students to use the bathroom that fit their gender identity and it would also allow teachers to use the preferred pronouns of the students. However, the 2023 updated model policies change that as now students are required to use the bathrooms, facilities, and locker rooms that match their biological sex. It would also block teachers from addressing students by a different pronoun or name unless the parents of the students have been informed or the change was requested by the parents.

On Monday Youngkin stated on “The Story” that the law has been clearly set and that parents are the ones who are going to be “in charge of their children’s lives.” He further argued that the ultimate decisions on these things belong to the parents and families of the students.
