(TargetLiberty.org) – Many people have wondered how North Korea – a nation so corrupt and inefficient that it’s starving its own population – managed to find the resources to develop a nuclear weapon program. Now we know; they stole them.
A UN watchdog group that monitors sanctions on North Korea’s secretive regime released a new report on February 8, telling the Security Council that the city of Pyongyang is running a massive sanctions-busting operation to support its nuclear research. North Korea is carrying out online research and espionage to collect information it needs to illegally develop missiles and warheads – but the most audacious part of the operation is straight-up theft.

According to the latest reports from AP News, the North Korean regime has been financing weapons research by hacking, then stealing from, financial institutions and online currency exchanges. Between 2019 and November 2020, North Korean government hackers stole at least $316 million, which was then directed into nuclear research – often in collaboration with China and Iran.
