(TargetLiberty.org) – On Tuesday, 2024 Republican presidential candidate and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy reacted to Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) declaring a state of emergency over the large number of asylum seekers and immigrants that had entered her state. As he argued this marks a shift in the way the Democrats are handling the situation.

Healey in a press release had argued that the declaration was meant to function as a notice to both the Commonwealth and the federal government that the state’s shelter system is not able to sustain its current growth and that help was required. As it was stated there were over 20,000 people in state shelters, including 5,600 families, multiple children, and pregnant women.

During an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle” with host Laura Ingraham Ramaswamy was asked about the recent declaration of emergency which is connected to the greater debate about the immigration crisis and the dangers that it includes. As the host pointed out, Healey during her time as the state’s attorney general in 2017 had argued that their system in the state was working well, in reference to Massachusetts becoming a sanctuary state.

This week Healey revealed in a public statement that there had been no decrease in the levels of demand and that the surge in migrants entering the state was “unsustainable.”

Ramaswamy responded by pointing out that it was possible that Boston “elites” were upset about the change in their communities. He added that the donor class was the one controlling both parties and that they have now probably decided that it was time to start making complaints about the southern border.

He added that the problem currently is that everything was happening too late and that now even the Democrats who had previously been against the wall were in favor of it. He further argued that the declaration showed that there was a general shift away from the more relaxed border controls. He proceeded to argue that it would take “courage” in order for them to handle the crisis.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas responded to Healey’s declaration in a letter where he stated that the migrants arriving in her state had done so because it was a “beacon” for those who are in need. He proceeded to push for “punitive immigration laws”  to be reformed and for changes in the work authorization policies. As he argued, states should also receive more financial assistance.
