(TargetLiberty.org) – Although abortions are legal in the US, taxpayer dollars do not pay for the procedure in most circumstances thanks to the Hyde Amendment. Democrats have wanted to repeal that law for quite some time, arguing it disproportionately affects low-income and minority women. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is now defending that effort.
On Thursday, July 22, a reporter asked Pelosi about the recent passage of a bill to repeal the Hyde Amendment. She said the legislation passed in committee because Democrats believe “it is the right thing to do.” The congresswoman invoked her own faith, saying she had five kids in six years but she doesn’t believe she has a right to tell other people what to do.

Pelosi explained taxpayer-funded abortions have been a priority for the Democratic Party for “a long time.” She said the House will pass the bill, then send it over to the Senate to see what happens.
Democrats only have 50 votes in the Senate. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) supports the Hyde Amendment, likely making an attempt to repeal it dead on arrival in the upper chamber. However, it’s telling that they’re trying at all. Instead of focusing their attention on legislative priorities that help Americans, they’re pushing their pro-abortion agenda.
