Party Store Attacked For Halloween Costumes

( – A party supplies chain is under attack from the leftover “racist” costumes for sale in one of its Virginia stores. Party City, the largest costume and novelty retailer in North America, was targeted Monday after a Maryland woman complained on Facebook that their Fall Church, VA store was selling Confederate-themed costumes.

Caroline Eames Brasler, who is white but has two black adopted daughters, posted images of two costumes she found offensive — “Confederate officer” and “Confederate General Robert E Lee.” Both costumes feature hats marked with the CSA battle flag, which many claim is a symbol of racism.

Brasler is a former employee of Washington, DC, CBS affiliate WUSA 9, and her initial complaint was quickly amplified by WUSA 9 reporter Bruce Leshan, who tweeted it to his nearly 6,000 followers.

After more Twitter complaints, including a threat to camp outside Party City stores, photograph customers and post the images on social media, the company backtracked and announced it had told all stores and franchisees to pull the costumes.
