(TargetLiberty.org) – On Wednesday, former first lady Michelle Obama announced a new company she had co-founded which would make healthier food and drink options for children. PLEZi Nutrition is going to be creating foods that are lower in sugar and higher in nutrients which could help benefit the long-term health of children.

During her time in the White House, Michelle Obama made children’s nutrition one of her primary occupations, and this new company is going to be an extension of the work that she had started at the time. In a keynote address during a New York conference, she stated that when it comes to children’s nutrition there was no way of addressing the problem from the outside and that the only way to find true solutions was to work within the food and beverage industry.

As she noted the majority of children today are not meeting their recommended nutrition levels, and instead, they are eating and drinking a lot of sugar, with two-thirds of children having a sugary drink daily. PLEZi Nutrition, based in the District of Columbia, is a public benefit corporation seeking to help change that. The for-profit company is going to be focusing on helping improve the health of children while also donating $1 million to a FoodCorps initiative that helps 50 million students across the country have access to free school meals.

Michelle Obama stated that this company is going to be the start of transforming the food industry and helping children get healthier and better products. The products will be available in Target and Sprout stores, as well as online at Walmart.
