(TargetLiberty.org) – Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) along with other members of the progressive “Squad” are pushing for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached following the revelation that for years he failed to add in his financial disclosures deals and gifts that were completed with a prominent Republican donor.
On Tuesday, Bush put out a statement calling out Thomas for his “complete disregard for law and ethics” which as she points out does not align “with the trust and confidence placed in federal judges.” It is for this reason that she is calling for his impeachment as “the federal judiciary has failed to hold Justice Thomas accountable.” She proceeded to state that Thomas’ actions violated federal law.
Earlier this month, ProPublica put out a report in which they showed how Thomas, who has been serving in the country’s highest court since 1991, has been accepting gifts from Republican donor and real estate developer Harlan Crow. These gifts include luxury trips, stays at yachts and private resorts as well as usage of Crow’s jet according to the publication.
Supreme Court justices are required to file annual financial disclosures in which they have to disclose all gifts unless those gifts fall under certain exceptions. Thomas has argued that he was previously advised that he did not need to disclose the trips as they fell under the exception of “personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court.”
Days later, ProPublica put out a second report which showed that Thomas had sold a number of properties to Crow in 2014. These included the property that his mother and later brother’s family owned which was sold to Crow for $133,363. On Monday, CNN reported that Thomas intended to amend his financial disclosures to reflect this real estate deal.
