Mitch McConnell Endorses Trump-Backed Candidate

( – A GOP Senate hopeful in Georgia has picked up another high-profile endorsement in a move that could also signal the end of a rift at the top of the party. On October 27, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) threw his endorsement behind former NFL star Herschel Walker in Georgia’s 2022 Senate race.

Walker, who played for the Dallas Cowboys and three other teams during his 14-year NFL career, has had a strong campaign after his early endorsement by former President Donald Trump. McConnell’s backing is a sign that other leading Republicans are moving to help Trump promote candidates who want to continue his MAGA project. He is one of several other GOP members who have endorsed Walker, including Sen. John Thune (R-SD).

Relations between Trump and McConnell have had some low points this year, with the senator hesitating to back Trump’s campaign to investigate and challenge last year’s disputed election result. However, if McConnell is now endorsing a candidate closely linked to the former president, it indicates that their views align on Walker’s value within the party.

Walker is facing an uphill struggle, with the Democrats pledging massive funding and support for incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA). However, his fundraising efforts quickly built a lead over the other Republican candidates and he’s increasingly seen as the only one who can seriously challenge Warnock.

With President Biden’s popularity in freefall, potentially dragging other Dems with him, senior Republicans are pulling together to help Walker win.
