( – On Wednesday, Steve Scalise, R-La., who was McCarthy’s longtime No.2 in the House GOP, announced that he would place a bid for the Speakership.

In a letter sent to other House GOP members, Scalise brought up the 2017 congressional baseball game practice during which he had been shot and critically wounded. As he pointed out during the incident he had received the help of many of his conference members in order to get through. He added that the Republican conference was a family and that those Congress members had helped save his life while on the baseball field and had helped his family make it through when his chances were slim.

Scalise then said that God had given him another chance at life and that while the next chapters were going to be tough, he was ready to take on all the battles that arose. He then called for his colleagues to support his bid to become the House Speaker.

Scalise’s decision to enter the Speakership race comes after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was removed from office on Tuesday after all House Democrats and few Republican hardliners voted in favor of him being ousted.

On Τuesday night a senior GOP aide had also stated that Scalise could be considered the “frontrunner” in the speakership race adding that many in the republican conference would be “open” to him becoming the Speaker.

While Scalise was McCarthy’s No.2, the two had a tumultuous partnership at times, as in June, they had blamed each other for the conservative hardliners protesting McCarthy’s and President Biden’s debt limit deal.
