On Saturday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA.) made some controversial comments about January 6 rioters being armed if she and former Trump advisor Steve Bannon had organized the event.
Greene made her comments while speaking at the annual gala for New York’s Young Republican Club. She asserted that claims she participated in plotting the January 6 Capitol riot were false.
The Georgia Republican rehashed how — after the Capitol riot occurred — rumors swirled that she and Bannon had organized the event.
She added that if she and Bannon were involved, the riot would have been a success, adding that it would have “been armed.”
She also explained that she found the rumors funny, noting the irony in “a bunch of conservatives” and “second amendment supporters” arriving at a planned event “without guns.”
Greene has been an outspoken ally of former President Donald Trump, espousing his claims that the 2020 election was mired in voter fraud.
Earlier in the year, Greene was questioned by the House Committee investigating January 6 about her role in the effort to Overturn the certification of the 2020 Presidential election.
However, Greene’s assertions that attendees were unarmed aren’t entirely factual, given several attendees attempting to join the Washington, D.C. event at the Ellipse were armed, and Trump was informed of this.
Members of the Oath Keepers — whose leader was recently found guilty of Seditious Conspiracy — had stockpiled suitcases of weapons at a hotel in Virginia in preparation for storming the Capitol.
