(TargetLiberty.org) – Close to a year before the 2024 presidential election many experts have warned that the elections could be chaotic following the recent turnover of many election officials and workers across the country.
The mass exodus of election workers is connected to the unfounded allegations of voter fraud which have resulted in election officials often dealing with scrutiny and threats. As a result of the exit of many officials, the election teams in many states could be left understaffed or with workers who are inexperienced in handling the election process. For many of the workers, this could also end up being the first time that they will be running a high-stakes presidential election.
University of California, Los Angeles School of Law professor and election law expert Richard Hansens stated that he was “worried” about the decline in the numbers of election officials across the country. However, he added that it was unsurprising that so many have left their jobs given the level of harassment and threats they have received.
Hasen added that it was shocking to see some of the language being used against the officials and questioned why one would stay in a high-stress, not well-paid job where they would face this level of abuse. He further stated that in order to stay in such a job a person will need to be completely “committed to democracy” and even then it was “asking a lot.”
According to a Brennan Center survey conducted between March and April, around one-fifth of election officials are going to serve in a presidential election for the first time in 2024.
