(TargetLiberty.org) – A group of Massachusetts churches is taking a stand against a local ordinance they say puts an arbitrary restriction on their ability to hold services. Governor Charlie Baker ruled on May 18 churches can open at 40% of their capacity – and his executive order also says no jurisdiction in the state should enforce a stricter standard. Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone has ignored that and restricted religious services to no more than 10 people.
Now the First Liberty Institute, the largest religious liberty legal specialist in the US, has notified Curtatone that four local churches intend to follow state rules, not the mayor’s rules. The churches plan to operate at less than 40% capacity, institute 6-foot social distancing, and mandate face masks.

In a statement to the media, First Liberty Institute pointed out that Curtatone’s 10-person limit would have prevented “…Jesus and the twelve disciples from lawfully gathering in Somerville.”
