(TargetLiberty.org) – As most Americans partake in Independence Day festivities, a significant proportion of left-leaning citizens criticize the holiday, viewing it as a representation of historical injustices.
Prominent progressive advocate Bree Newsome Bass, best known for her 2015 act of removing the Confederate flag from South Carolina’s statehouse, used the power of social media to voice her critiques of the nation. She pointed out the illusion that the U.S. is continually advancing towards an equal rights society since its inception. Meanwhile, she accused the Supreme Court of substituting the constitution with their personal judgments.
She also expressed strong disapproval of those displaying the American flag on Independence Day, labeling them as either adherents of White supremacy or woefully uninformed. Newsome Bass further insisted that African Americans are not genuinely free in the U.S. According to her, Independence Day is celebrated in the U.S. solely because it doesn’t acknowledge the emancipation of Black individuals. She pointed out that this holiday has been observed throughout two hundred years of slavery, the Jim Crow era, and recently, the Supreme Court’s decision to undermine the 14th Amendment.
Cori Bush, a member of the progressive “Squad” and a Democratic representative from Missouri, echoed these sentiments and criticisms regarding the nation’s founders in a recent tweet. She underscored the need for racial reparations for those who have suffered since the country’s establishment. She mentioned that the Declaration of Independence was drafted “by enslavers” who didn’t consider Black individuals as equal humans.
