Latest Cyberattack Highlights US Weaknesses

( – The US has reached “a moment of reckoning,” says a Republican congressman, after a recent cyber attack showed the weakness of the Biden administration when it comes to protecting us against foreign aggression.

On July 5, Representative John Katko (R-NY) told British reporters that a backlash against President Biden over perceived weakness in foreign policy shows we need to take a firmer line against nations that threaten us. Katko, the ranking member on the House Homeland Security Committee, says Friday’s ransomware attack on global businesses compromises vital US infrastructure – and we need to respond.

The July 2 attack hit over a million companies worldwide, including many in the US. The hacker group REvil is demanding $70 million in Bitcoin to fix it. Some reports suggest REvil may be linked to DarkSide, which carried out the May 7 Colonial Pipeline attack. While it’s not confirmed to be connected to the Russian state, its automated software checks that targets aren’t Russian before attacking them.

Last month, Biden told Russian leader Vladimir Putin that the US will retaliate against any more ransomware attacks. Since the 2020 election, Darkside has targeted US energy infrastructure four times, and now REvil has launched a broader attack on the economy. We already have Biden’s promise that he’ll hit back. It’s time for him to stop talking and start acting.
