Joe Manchin Supports Abortion Rights Bill, Just Not the One Proposed

Joe Manchin May Have Struck Down The Radical Abortion Rights Bill, But He Is NOT In Favor Of Protecting Life

(TargetLiberty.org) – On May 11, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) brought legislation to the floor to codify abortion rights protection for women on a national level. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) joined Republicans in opposition of the measure but stated he would support the codification of Roe v. Wade — just not the one up for a vote. He told reporters he would not support the proposed legislation brought by Schumer.

The West Virginia legislator said the Women’s Health Protection Act as written would not codify Roe v. Wade, which he would support, but it “expands” abortion rights, which is apparently something he does not support.

The drastic and quick vote in the Senate was prompted by the leaked draft opinion from the Supreme Court, which shows the justices leaning toward overturning the 1973 landmark abortion case. Although the SCOTUS decision is not yet final, the draft sparked protests all over the country, prompting legislators to respond.

Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME) drafted a bill with bipartisan support to codify the Roe case, but not as broadly. The proposed legislation may get support from Manchin, but Schumer would not bring it to the Senate floor.

SCOTUS is due to publish its final opinion in June or July.
