(TargetLiberty.org) – Gregory Mijares, who has been charged in connection to his participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, has been pushing to be allowed to own a weapon. During the attack, Mijares was accused of having slammed into a police officer.
Mijares has now argued that considering former President Donald Trump is allowed to possess a weapon, he should also be allowed to.
Many of the defendants in the Jan. 6 cases have also been arguing that Trump was to blame for the Capitol attack and that they had only gone to the Capitol because Trump had told them to go there after he claimed that the 2020 election had been stolen.
In August, Trump had been charged on four counts relating to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
Jerry Ray Smith Jr., the attorney for Mijares wrote in the filing that the judge needed to modify his pretrial release conditions so that his client could possess a bow and arrows that he could use for hunting. Smith added that while Trump is facing charges he has not been restricted from having weapons and firearms.
However, prosecutors have argued that the reference to the former President was “unavailing” mainly because the charges against Trump did not relate to the violence at the Capitol.
U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves has also added that President Trump is a Secret Service protectee. As he pointed out that the Secret Service was always well-armed.
